Police struggles to recover body of American missionary killed by Sentinel tribe

The Andaman police has been violently confronted by the tribesmen of North Sentinel Island, who have been regarded for many centuries as the “most violent and cruel generation” on earth.

The altercation is prompted by the police as they make efforts to retrieve the body of a young American missionary that was brutally killed by the native people last week.

John Allen Chau, a 27-year old trained missionary who had ventured illegally into the forbidden island to preach Christianity to the people is believed to have been killed with bow and arrow by the Sentinelese.

Chau, who made the trip through the help of local fishermen was aware of the imminent danger involved in his journey and also the uncertainty of his return as he sent a note through the fishermen to his friends and family.

“You guys might think I’m crazy in all this but I think it’s worthwhile to declare Jesus to these people. Please do not be angry at them or at God if I get killed …” he wrote.

Authorities within the jurisdiction of the Andaman Island have expressed the difficulty involved in trying to recover Chau’s body from the violent tribe.

“The mission was done from a distance to avoid any potential conflict with the tribespeople as it’s a sensitive zone,” said Dependra Pathak, a top police official in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

“We are discussing with anthropologists and psychologists about the nature of the Sentinelese. There are legal requirements as well which we need to keep in mind while carrying out the operation. We are also studying the 2006 case where two local fishermen were killed. The bodies were recovered then,” Pathak said.

Some fishermen reported that they had seen the Sentinelese dragging Chau’s body and had probably buried him where some tribespeople were seen wielding bows and arrows.

The Authorities have not yet confirmed where the body could possibly be, but they continue devising means to find and retrieve the body as the fishermen who helped Chau get to the Island are arrested.
