3 Christian students in Egypt face trial for insulting Islam
Three Coptic Christian students will appear before a court in Egypt on Thursday to answer for charges of blaspheming Islam.
The high school students are accused of appearing in a video mocking muslim prayers, AP reports.
Their Christian teacher who filmed the 30-second video, have been sentenced to three years in prison following a separate trial over the same charges even though the teacher had fled the town before the trial.
According to abc News, the video showed the students pretending to pray with one kneeling on the floor while reciting Quranic verses and two others standing behind him and laughing. One waved his hand under a second’s neck in a sign of beheading.
Their lawyer, Maher Naguib, who described the students act in the video as a “random and spontaneous action by some youngsters inside a bedroom and for only few seconds”, said he is going to appeal against the ruling in the teacher’s case.
