Police arrest ‘fake lawyer’ who helped robbery suspects escape from custody

Police in Ondo, on Monday, paraded an alleged fake lawyer who aided the escape of two robbery suspects from SARS custody on July 30.

The suspect, Taye Mapayi, was said to have helped Rotimi Adeleye and Bukola Adeoye escape from SARS detention late last month.

Adeoye, notoriously known as ‘Agbara’, was later gunned down during a duel with the Police at a robbery operation at Ore in Ondo.

Police spokesman in the state, Femi Joseph, said Mapayi was arrested following investigations.

“Mr. Mapayi has been parading himself as a lawyer, even though he is an impostor and aided the escape of the two suspects from our custody,” Joseph said.

“The same fake lawyer cut the handcuffs off the two robbery suspects and consequently escaped with them to Ore. He also went ahead to accuse the Police of extra-judicial killing as it related to one of the suspects.

“He has since confessed to being a fake lawyer who has been duping unsuspecting members of the public. In fact, our investigation shows that he didn’t pass through the four walls of a Law school.”

Mapayi, however, told newsmen he was not aware that the late Adeoye was a robber.

“He is my cousin and I don’t know anything about his escape from the police custody. I just read in the newspaper that he (Adeoye) was arrested by the police and I went there to see him,” he said.
