Peter Mbah Warns PDP: Respect South-East or Risk Losing Our Support
Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu has warned that the South-East zone may reconsider its continued membership in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) if the party fails to resolve its internal crisis, particularly concerning the national secretary position.
Speaking after a closed-door meeting at the Enugu Government House on Sunday, Mbah said the region’s position must not be ignored.
“For the record, just as I stated during my interactive session with Fellows and Members of the Nigerian Guild of Editors in Enugu at the weekend, while I am still a member of the PDP, the south-east — and that includes me — reserves the right to review our continued membership of the party if the party is unwilling to put its house in order,” Mbah said.
He added, “That was invariably the position adopted during our last south-east zonal meeting held here in Enugu.”
The PDP’s south-east zonal executive committee had on May 14 recommended Sunday Udeh-Okoye as national secretary in a communique signed by Ali Odefa, its zonal chairman, warning that the zone could review its ties with the party if sidelined.
Mbah expressed frustration with the party’s leadership, stating: “I’m simply fed up with the shenanigans that have more or less made the party an endless circus.”
“The position of the south-east concerning the national secretaryship of the party as issued in that communiqué is sacrosanct,” he said.
Meanwhile, a faction of the PDP’s national leadership has backed Samuel Anyanwu — an ally of FCT minister Nyesom Wike — as national secretary, a move rejected by 11 NWC members who insist the NEC meeting will hold on June 30.
