Violence erupts as Army kill Oseguera Cervantes, drug cartel leader in Mexico
Violence has broken out across parts of Mexico following the killing of Nemesio “El Mencho” Oseguera Cervantes, the alleged leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG), during a military operation in Jalisco state.
Mexican authorities said troops engaged in a gun battle on Sunday while attempting to apprehend the 59-year-old former police officer in his home state. Four cartel members were killed at the scene, while three others including Oseguera died while being airlifted to Mexico City.
The CJNG is regarded as one of Mexico’s most powerful and rapidly expanding criminal organisations. Oseguera, widely considered the country’s most-wanted drug kingpin, had been accused of overseeing the trafficking of fentanyl, methamphetamine and cocaine into the United States, as well as orchestrating violent attacks against security forces and public officials.
The United States reportedly provided intelligence support for the operation. The US State Department had previously announced a $15 million reward for information leading to his arrest.
In the aftermath of his death, unrest spread across multiple states. Armed groups set up roadblocks, torched vehicles and clashed with security forces. Social media footage showed fires burning in several locations, including Puerto Vallarta, a major tourist destination on Mexico’s Pacific coast.
Local media outlets reported heavy fighting in Tapalpa, a town in the Sierra Madre region, while airlines cancelled dozens of flights due to security concerns.
Tensions were also high in Guadalajara, the capital of Jalisco and one of the host cities for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. At the city’s airport, passengers were seen scrambling for safety amid fears of retaliatory attacks, as armed men reportedly set vehicles ablaze in parts of the city.
Authorities have yet to announce additional security measures, but the federal government is expected to intensify its response as it seeks to prevent further violence.
