11 PDP NWC Members Oppose Anyanwu Reinstatment as party chairman
Confusion has gripped the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as eleven members of its National Working Committee (NWC) have rejected the return of Senator Samuel Anyanwu as the party’s national secretary.
This comes shortly after Umar Damagum, the party’s acting national chairman, announced at a press conference on Wednesday that Anyanwu would resume as secretary. The event was attended by Bala Mohammed, Governor of Bauchi and Chairman of the PDP Governors’ Forum, Abba Moro, Minority Leader of the Senate, and other party leaders.
But in a joint statement, the 11 NWC members, including Taofeek Arapaja, Setonji Koshoedo, and Debo Ologunagba, declared the announcement “misleading.”
“The pronouncements by the acting national chairman have no foundation as no organ of the party (including the NWC), individual or group has the power to cancel, overrule, veto or vary the resolution of the national executive committee (NEC) under the constitution of the PDP (as amended in 2017),” the statement read.
“Furthermore, the claim by Amb. Damagum that sen. Samuel Anyanwu has been asked to resume office as the national secretary of the party is therefore misleading, being contrary to the resolution of NEC.”
They also maintained that the 100th NEC meeting set for June 30 remains on schedule despite Damagum’s claim of its cancellation.
Anyanwu’s claim to the secretaryship has been mired in legal and political wrangling, with the party’s leadership, courts, and regional stakeholders divided on who holds the rightful mandate.
