Nigerian Army kills 16 terrorists in effort to repel ISWAP attack on Damboa

Nigerian Army troops under Operation Hadin Kai successfully repelled a fierce, coordinated assault by Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) and Boko Haram insurgents on Damboa town in southern Borno State.

The attack, which began around 1 a.m., was met with immediate resistance from ground forces and reinforced by powerful air support and indirect fire from the air component command. According to an official statement released by the Nigerian Army, the gun battle raged for over two hours before the terrorists were forced to retreat.

“The main thrust of the attack targeted the Brigade, prompting the swift deployment of air support to assist ground forces,” the statement said. “After approximately two hours of intense engagement, the terrorists were forced to retreat after suffering casualties.”

At least 16 insurgents were confirmed killed during the operation, and the military has launched pursuit operations to track down those who fled the scene. Clearance missions are also underway in nearby areas to ensure the safety and security of the local population.

The statement also confirmed that during the exchange of fire, a terrorist projectile struck an ammunition storage facility, igniting a blaze that affected two buildings. However, the fire was quickly contained, and there was no further escalation.

Damboa has long been a flashpoint in the fight against ISWAP and Boko Haram, with frequent attacks aimed at destabilising the region. The military’s swift and coordinated response in this latest encounter underscores its commitment to maintaining security and pushing back against insurgent threats.
