Nigerian Troops Foil ISWAP Attack on Military Base in Borno State
Troops of the Nigerian Army and Nigerian Air Force (NAF) successfully repelled an early-morning assault by suspected ISWAP terrorists on a Forward Operating Base (FOB) in Rann, Kala-Balge Local Government Area of Borno State.
According to counter-insurgency publication Zagazola Makama, the attack occurred on Wednesday as the insurgents, camouflaged as Fulani herdsmen, launched a surprise offensive against the military installation.
Alert troops swiftly engaged the attackers in a fierce firefight, holding their ground until air support arrived. A NAF fighter jet was deployed to the area mid-assault, providing crucial backup that turned the tide of battle.
As the air troops approached, the terrorists scattered, attempting to flee in different directions. However, a NAF pilot locked onto a fleeing Hilux truck carrying militants and successfully neutralised several insurgents while destroying the vehicle.
Though the exact number of terrorist casualties is still being verified, sources confirm that calm has been restored to the area thanks to the swift and coordinated response by Nigerian forces.
The attempted assault comes just a day after Boko Haram insurgents reportedly killed five soldiers during separate attacks on military bases within Borno State — highlighting the ongoing volatility in Nigeria’s northeast despite continued counter-terrorism operations.
