Nigeria held to draw in Cameroon, go one step closer to FIFA World Cup ticket
Nigeria is one win from reaching the 2018 FIFA World Cup following a 1-1 draw with Cameroon in Yaounde on Monday evening.
The reigning African champions needed a win against the in-form Super Eagles to keep alive their hope of reaching the tournament holding in Russia.
But the Super Eagles had their script to play out, with Moses Simon putting Nigeria in front after 30 minutes.
The Cameroon defence failed to clear a loose ball which eventually fell to Simon who volleyed the ball in for the opener.
China-based Odion Ighalo then came close to making it 2-0 just two minutes later, latching on to a Victor Moses and losing his marker only to fire his shot just over.
Victor Moses himself would come even closer to extending Nigeria’s lead in the second half but saw his 66th minute effort graze the Cameroon crossbar.
Those missed chances came back to haunt Nigeria as the Indomitable Lions pulled a goal back through Vincent Aboubakar‘s 75th minute penalty
But the Super Eagles held on to claim a share of the spoils and end Cameroon’s chance of taking part in the 2018 World Cup.
Recall that Nigeria thrashed Cameroon 4-0 last Friday and now need only to beat Zambia in their next match on October 7 to qualify for the World Cup.
