Lawmakers clamour for Buhari’s impeachment over $496m aircraft purchase
Some lawmakers have urged the Senate to launch an ingredient process for acquiring military aircraft without the approval of the National Assembly.
Buhari purchased the 12 Super Tucano aircraft from the United States government with $496 million from the Excess Crude Account.
The President sent a letter to the Senate on Wednesday, saying that the money was withdrawn to pay for the aircraft in order to beat the deadline for the arms deal.
The planes won’t arrive Nigeria until 2020.
The lawmakers, at the plenary on Thursday, said the president had breached a section of the constitution which says any government’s spending must be approved by the legislature.
Some lawmakers, however, say Buhari isn’t the first president to commit such “crime”, that the clamour for an impeachment move was a “PDP conspiracy.”
