Military air strike kills terrorist commanders, ‘over 50 insurgents’ in Lake Chad
The Nigerian military has recorded a major breakthrough in its counter-insurgency campaign after airstrikes under Operation Hadin Kai reportedly killed several senior terrorist commanders and more than 50 fighters in the Lake Chad region.
According to security sources quoted by counter-insurgency publication Zagazola Makama, the precision strikes were conducted on May 31 around the Kirta and Arina Ciki areas following intelligence reports of terrorist activities in the region.
The operation targeted suspected terrorist hideouts, logistics hubs, and support facilities believed to be critical to insurgent operations across the Lake Chad Basin.
Post-strike assessments indicated that among those killed were Khalifa Umar, said to be a member of the terrorists’ Shura Council, as well as two field commanders identified as Abdallah and Abduljalil. Military sources also reported that more than 50 insurgents were neutralised during the operation.
In addition to the casualties, several logistics facilities, supply depots, and other support structures used by the insurgents were destroyed, dealing a significant blow to their operational capabilities.
Security sources said sustained aerial offensives in the region have increased pressure on insurgent groups, forcing many fighters to abandon their traditional island strongholds and relocate to more vulnerable positions on the mainland.
While the security situation across the theatre remains stable, military officials noted that it is still fluid and requires continued vigilance. They expressed confidence in the readiness, morale, and effectiveness of troops engaged in ongoing operations.
The latest operation is expected to strengthen recent gains made in the fight against terrorism and support ongoing efforts to restore peace and stability across the Lake Chad region.
