“It’ll happen” – Donald Trump plans to end citizenship by birth in US
Donald Trump plans to sign an executive order that’ll put a stop to automatic citizenship for children born in the United States.
Trump, known for his brutish immigration policies, said in a recent interview for ‘Axios on HBO’ that the plan was already in the works.
“It’s in the process, it’ll happen,” he told the channel.
He said, albeit incorrectly, that America is “the only country in the world where a person comes in and has a baby, and the baby is essentially a citizen of the United States … with all of those benefits.
“It’s ridiculous. It’s ridiculous. And it has to end,” he added.
Trump said he had learnt that the adjustment could be made without constitutional amendment.
“It was always told to me that you needed a constitutional amendment. Guess what? You don’t,” he said, declaring he can do it by executive order. “You can definitely do it with an Act of Congress. But now they’re saying I can do it just with an executive order.”
Since becoming President, Trump has maintained a hard stance on what he calls “chain migration”, and his latest plan is expected to set off another stand-off with the courts.
It is reported that the President’s power to effect such law through executive action is highly debatable.
