Obidients: How Peter Obi’s supporters remained upbeat at Lagos rally despite attack by hoodlums

Supporters of the Labour Party in Nigeria and its Presidential candidate in the 2023 presidential elections, Peter Obi, turned out in their large numbers and were in high spirits at the Tafawa Balewa Square (TBS) in Lagos on Saturday, February 11, 2023, despite reports of a high number of attacks on some of the supporters in some parts of Lagos in the early hours of the day.

Some of Peter Obi’s supporters called Obidients were attacked by suspected hoodlums in some parts of Lagos while heading to TBS, venue of the grand finale of Labour Party’s presidential campaign rally in Lagos on Saturday.

In more than 10 social media posts examined by Neusroom, some of the buses and cars conveying the supporters to the venue of the rally were damaged.

Channels TV also reports that medical personnel at the TBS had “their hands full as they tried to attend to the injured supporters.”

Ben Hundeyin, the Lagos Police PRO in a statement confirmed that the “regrettable attack happened at about 15km away from the rally venue.”

The Police Spokesperson said SCID will take over investigations towards apprehending and prosecuting the attackers.

However, the attack didn’t dampen the spirits of the Obidients who turned out at the TBS to support the presidential hopeful as he wraps up his campaign and tour of the 36 states of the federation.

The rally which was a carnival of a sort had musical performances from P Square, African China, Klint Da Drunk, among others.

Some of the supporters also put up a show in other parts of Lagos.

Before heading to the Tafawa Balewa Square, the historic ground where Nigeria was declared an independent nation on October 1, 1960, Peter Obi had visited the Alaba international market in Ojo local government area of Lagos, largely dominated by Igbo traders.
