Officials apprehend Segun Martins in Ilorin for failed stowaway attempt
The Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has detained a man identified as Segun Martins after he attempted to stow away on an Overland Airways aircraft at the Gen. Tunde Idiagbon International Airport in Ilorin, Kwara State.
In a statement on Wednesday, Michael Achimugu, NCAA’s director of public affairs and consumer protection, said the incident occurred at about 3:02 p.m.
According to Achimugu, Martins allegedly breached restricted areas of the airport and made his way to the foot of an aircraft preparing to taxi for takeoff.
He reportedly attempted to hide between the plane’s tyres before being spotted and apprehended by airport ground security personnel. The suspect was subsequently handed over to the airport police division for further investigation.
Achimugu added that during preliminary questioning, Martins claimed he thought the aircraft was headed for the United States and had hoped to escape the country by hiding in the plane’s undercarriage.
The NCAA said investigations are ongoing.
