Usman-Led Labour Party Debunks Expulsion Rumour Against Peter Obi

Is Peter Obi’s One-Term Proposal a Sign of Desperation?

The Labour Party, under the leadership of Senator Nenadi Usman, has debunked claims that it is planning to expel its 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, describing such rumours as part of a desperate attempt to sabotage ongoing coalition efforts.

This comes after Abayomi Arabambi, a former factional spokesperson of the party, told Channels Television that the party was preparing to remove Obi. But in a strongly worded statement signed by Ken Eluma Asogwa, Senior Special Adviser to the Acting National Chairman, the party dismissed the claims as coming from “political jesters” with no legal or moral standing.

“These impostors, acting on behalf of shadowy interests, intend to purport an expulsion of Mr. Obi from the Labour Party – a move as laughable as it is illegal,” the statement read.

The party insisted that Obi enjoys “the full backing and blessing of the leadership” in the ongoing coalition talks aimed at building a united opposition front ahead of the 2027 elections.

The LP further referenced a Supreme Court ruling delivered on April 4, 2025, which it says invalidated the legitimacy of those laying claim to party leadership.

“The public is therefore strongly advised to treat any statement emanating from these impostors as null and void,” it warned.

Obi, who placed third in the 2023 presidential election, has in recent months intensified meetings with key opposition figures as part of a coalition effort under the ADC that could reshape Nigeria’s political landscape before 2027.
