How Peter Obi floored Tinubu, famed godfather of Lagos politics, in his ‘stronghold’

Why NPC hold Peace Accord for Presidential candidates

The Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has defeated Bola Tinubu, the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos, despite widespread violence in some parts of the state during the election on Saturday, February 25, 2023.

Tinubu, the famed godfather of Lagos politics, who has maintained a stronghold of the state since leaving office as governor in 2007, polled 572,606 votes to trail Obi who polled 582,454 votes.

Although this is not the first time Tinubu’s party will be losing a presidential election in Lagos, the party lost to PDP in 2011. The 2023 loss came as a shock to the party and Tinubu’s followers who had underestimated the LP candidate.

The National Youth Leader of APC, Dayo Israel, who appeared to be shocked with the Lagos result, has taken to social media to lament and criticise members of the party for not turning out to vote because they were not ‘mobilised’.

“Our people sometimes can be Alatenuje. Most people refuse to come out because of mobilisation. Some expect others have come out so they don’t need to. Progressives in Lagos, wake up, we have the numbers, get out the vote and stop waiting for mobilisation. E jade E fibo soro (let’s speak with our votes),” he tweeted.

He added: “Nobody should do “One million Man March” Oribu kan mo. Focus on door to door. Party excos, youth leaders, councilors, leaders, we have 10days to #SanwoAgain, go and engage your neighbours. #deliveryourstreet, be humble, get off your high horse. Ise wa o.”
