How Boniface’s Injury Will Affect Super Eagles AFCON Campaign
In-form Bayer Leverkusen Man, Victor Boniface, has been ruled out of the Africa Cup Of Nations due to a groin injury he sustained while training with the National team. The Nigeria Football Federation has invited OGC Nice forward, Terem Moffi, as his replacement.
This news serves as a major blow to the Super Eagles as the striker was looking forward to his debut tournament for the eagles including with the prospect of forming a deadly strike partnership with Nigeria’s Victor Osimhen at the Continental showpiece in Ivory Coast. Also, the Eagles recently lost Wilfried Ndidi to injury which keeps the Leicester City midfielder out for three months at least.
Boniface has made four more appearances for the National team since he made his debut in October 2023. He has been in red-hot form for his club side Bayer Leverkusen, where he recorded 10 goals for his Club in the league since his move from Belgian side, Union St. Gilloise in the summer which has propelled his new team (Leverkusen) to the top of the German League.
The 23-year-old striker has also been attracting interest from top clubs across Europe for his performance this season. He has won four rookie of the month award for his impressive performances in Germany.
The replacement for Boniface in the Nigerian Squad, Terem Moffi, has seven caps for the Eagles with two goals to his name and he currently plys his trade in France for OGC Nice. Moffi received his first call-up for the Super Eagles of Nigeria under the former coach of the team, Gernot Rohr in May 2021.
The Super Eagles are set to play Equatorial Guinea in the first match of their AFCON campaign on January 14, 2024, before further clashes with host nation, Ivory Coast and Guinea-Bissau.
