Meet Éric Chelle: The Malian Tasked with Reviving the Super Eagles

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has announced Éric Sékou Chelle as the new head coach of the Super Eagles, sparking debates among fans eager to see the team’s resurgence.

Here’s a closer look at the man tasked with reviving Nigeria’s World Cup hopes.

Background and Early Life

Éric Sékou Chelle was born on November 11, 1977, in Abidjan, Ivory Coast, to a French father and a Malian mother. Though born in Ivory Coast, Chelle chose to represent Mali at the international level. His French nationality shaped much of his professional career in Europe.

Playing Career

Chelle spent his entire playing career in France as a centre-back. Starting at Martigues in 1998, he made 74 appearances before moving to Valenciennes in 2003. Over five seasons, Chelle made 142 appearances and played a pivotal role in helping Valenciennes achieve promotion to Ligue 1.

He later featured for Lens (82 appearances), Istres (60 appearances), and Chamois Niortais (17 appearances) before retiring in 2014. While he was never known for goal-scoring, his defensive prowess and leadership made him a consistent presence in every team he played for.

On the international stage, Chelle earned five caps for Mali, representing the country of his heritage.

Transition to Coaching

Chelle embarked on his managerial journey (after he was assistant manager for the club for two years) in 2016 with GS Consolat, achieving a winning rate of 53.33% in 30 matches. Later, he moved to FC Martigues, where he managed 80 games but had a more modest record with 35 victories.

In 2021, Chelle was appointed head coach of US Boulogne but struggled to make an impact, securing just two wins in 16 games before his dismissal. However, his fortunes turned around when he was named Mali’s head coach in 2022.

Rise with Mali

Chelle’s tenure with Mali marked the pinnacle of his coaching career so far. In 22 matches, he recorded 14 wins, 5 draws, and only 3 losses. Under his guidance, Mali reached the quarter-finals of the 2023 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Côte d’Ivoire, a significant achievement for the national team.

A New Chapter with Nigeria

On January 7, 2025, the NFF announced Chelle as head coach of the Super Eagles. While his appointment has faced criticism, with fans labeling him a “French Ligue 2 veteran,” Chelle’s record with Mali suggests he has the potential to deliver results.

Chelle’s debut with the Super Eagles is set for March, when Nigeria faces Rwanda and Zimbabwe in crucial World Cup qualifiers. With his deep commitment and a track record of inspiring performances, Nigerian fans will hope he can replicate his successes and guide the Super Eagles back to glory.
