Hoodlums on rampage as customs officers kill suspected rice smuggler in Lagos

Following the killing of a rice smuggler by suspected Customs officers, pandemonium broke out in the Abule Egba area of Lagos State.

It was gathered that customs officers had chased the rice smuggler the area in the early hours of Wednesday, January 17, where he was shot dead, after which they ran away.

A police source who confirmed the incident disclosed that the body of the deceased was seen lying on the ground while bags of rice were seen inside a commercial bus with registration number Lagos/RKY/1953506.

Stains of blood were seen on the body of the bus and some bags of rice.

The killing, however, resulted in a protest, where Irate youths burnt tyres and blocked the express road. The refusal of the youths that the dead body should not be evacuated from the area by the police officers who came to the scene further fuelled the crisis.

As at morning, motorists avoided the Abule Egba axis, while those who dared, were compelled to ply another route as hoodlums were on a rampage.
