Four police officers die as patrol van collides with tipper in Ikorodu

Four police officers lost their lives in an accident at Ikorodu while on duty on Sunday afternoon.

The men, numbering five, were said to be on a surveillance patrol when their vehicle collided with an unregistered tipper.

The accident occurred along Isiwu Road, Imota around 1pm.

Three of the five officers died on the spot, reports say.

Olarinde Famous-Cole, the state police spokesperson, said the driver of the tipper fled the scene.

“At about 1pm, a police truck, which had five policemen on board in a Nissan frontier van was allegedly hit by a tipper lorry with no registration number,” he said.

“The driver, who cannot be identified as of the time of this report, fled the scene. Both vehicles were coming from opposite direction at a point near Isiwu town when the collision occurred. Three policemen died on the spot.

“An Assistant Superintendent of Police and an inspector, who sustained serious injuries were rescued and rushed to the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, Ikeja, where the latter died and the former is currently admitted.”

The officers’ remains were deposited at the Ikorodu General Hospital and LASUTH, Ikeja for autopsy.

The driver of the tipper, which had been towed to the police division, has been declared wanted.
