Former House of Assembly speaker, others arrested for allegedly killing policeman in Lagos

A former speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Joko Pelumi, is facing murder charges along with 49 others.

Police say Pelumi and other suspects have attacked and killed a police officer attached to the anti-cultism unit on Saturday.

Lagos Police boss, Imohimi Edgal said the arrested suspects attacked and killed the Deputy Superintendent of Police, while he was facilitating the arrest of some suspected cultists.

“On Oct. 27, at about 4:30 p.m, a team of Anti Cultism policemen attached to Area ‘N’ Ijede, were attacked while trying to effect an arrest of some suspected cultists, In the process, a police officer by name DSP Akingboju Akindele was killed,” he said.

Imohimi said the suspects were traced and were found resting in Pelumi’s house shortly after committing the crime.

“Investigation into the case led to the arrest of 49 suspects including a former Speaker, Lagos State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Joko Pelumi,” Imohimi said.

“The policeman’s rifle had been recovered at waterfront Ijede where it was buried.

“The other suspects and the former lawmaker will be treated as an accomplice.”

Imohimi added that the arrested suspects were currently being investigated at SCID Panti, Yaba and would be charged to court.
