Former South Korean president, Lee Myung-bak has been sentenced to serve fifteen years in jail for corruption.
Myung-bak’s sentence was handed down on Friday after he was found guilty on charges including bribery and embezzlement. The court also ordered him to pay a fine of $11.5 million.
The 76-year-old who served as president from 2008 to 2013, was in April indicted on 16 charges that included bribery, embezzlement, and abuse of power.
Myung-bak was found to be the de-facto owner of DAS, an auto parts company which he used to create slush funds of around $22m. He had claimed that the company was his brother’s.
He was also found guilty of accepting nearly $6m from Samsung Electronics in return for a presidential pardon for its chairman Lee Kun-hee, who was jailed for tax evasion.
