Bayelsa assembly confirms pastor Peter Akpe as new deputy governor
The Bayelsa State House of Assembly has confirmed Pastor Peter Akpe as the new deputy governor of Bayelsa State, paving the way for his swearing-in.
Akpe’s confirmation follows his nomination by Governor Douye Diri, under whom he previously served as chief of staff. An ordained minister of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), Akpe brings a blend of clerical, civil service, and political experience to the role.
Before fully venturing into politics, he worked in both the Rivers and Bayelsa state civil services. He later served two terms in the Bayelsa State House of Assembly from 2011 to 2019, where he held the position of majority leader throughout his tenure.
Akpe also held executive office as a commissioner between 2008 and 2011 during the administration of former governor Seriake Dickson.
His appointment comes in the wake of the passing of the immediate past deputy governor, Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, who died in December. With the assembly’s approval secured, Akpe is set to assume office as the state’s new deputy governor.
