Many passengers aboard an aircraft headed for a key tin-mining region in Indonesia are feared dead after it crashed into the sea early Monday morning.
The Lion Air flight, JT610, according to reports, lost contact with ground officials 13 minutes after its 6:20 am takeoff, before plunging into the sea off Indonesia’s island of Java.
The aircraft is reported to have carried over 180 passengers. There has been no confirmation if there were any surviving passengers in the aircraft.
The cause of the crash was also still unknown, but Indonesia’s disaster agency spokesman posted video of some debris on Twitter.
Boeing is aware of the airplane accident reports and is “closely monitoring” the situation, it said on social network Twitter.
