Woman drags ex-husband to Sharia court over 20 years worth of child support
Aisha Alhassan, a 40 years old woman dragged her ex-husband, Murtala Ishaq before the Magajin Gari Sharia Court in Kaduna.
Aisha claimed that Murtala abandoned his daughter for 20 years. She told the court that she has solely been taking care of her daughter since she was born.
“We divorced 20 years ago when Asiya was an infant, since then, he had never cared for her needs. I fed her, clothed her and even paid her school fees without any support from him,” she said.
Aisha also claimed her daughter stopped her education at polytechnic level because she could afford the tuition of N65,000.
Murtala denied the accusations, saying he had always been handling his responsibilities as a parent. He said the court had given him custody of the child 20 years ago but her mother forcefully took her away.
He claimed was the reason he reduced taking charge of some of his responsibilities.
“They told the court that the girl had gotten suitors, who are interested in marriage and I gave my consent, but the mother insists the girl must go to a higher institution,” he said.
However, he told the court that he was a poor man and couldn’t afford to send his daughter to college. He also told the court that the to-be husband should shoulder the cost of her education to college.
The case was adjourned to September 4, to enable Aisha bring her alibi.
