Woman, 23, smashes her newborn baby against the wall, gets 1 year jail term

Jelica was only 20 years old when she found out she was pregnant for her then boyfriend.

The news was apparently not well received by her lover who asked that she terminate it. He would later separate from her.

She said of her ex, “he wanted me to abort, then he left me. I was alone.”

By December 2015, when her pregnancy was seven months, Jelica personally delivered one of her twin babies in a bath at her home in Lucerne, Switzerland, through instructions she learnt on the internet.

However, immediately the first boy was born, she proceeded to smash the infant against the wall in her basement before throwing him to the ground. According to the Mirror, the newborn was then wrapped in a Mickey Mouse t-shirt before Jelica put his fractured body inside a giant pink teddy.

The newborn had suffered multiple skull fractures and a traumatic brain injury.

Jelica would later be found unconscious after suffering loss of blood. The other baby arrived as a stillborn almost 35 hours later and the mother wrapped him up in a towel before hiding it in the laundry basket in her kitchen.

“I just put him there. I do not know what went on in my head,” Jelica is quoted as saying about her actions.

Three years later, in 2019, she has been sentenced to serve a year in prison.

Prosecutors said during trial that she “seems naive” and that she couldn’t afford to pay for an abortion.

The court found Jelica guilty of homicide and negligence, hearing that she could have given birth to a healthy child had she gone to the hospital after the birth of the first boy.
