Family disowns daughter for refusing to sell newborn baby in Anambra

A family in Anambra State have allegedly ordered their daughter to put her newborn baby up for sale after giving birth out of wedlock. The 24-year-old was then ejected from the family house for refusing to do their bidding.

A nongovernmental organisation in the State, Safenest, said it had taken the new mother in and would provide her needs.

The NGO’s executive director, Mrs. Oluchukwu Chukwuenyem, said on Monday that the family had initially advised Oluchukwu to abort the baby but she refused.

“The Family of one Miss Oluchukwu, aged 24, rejected her for refusing to sell her baby boy whom she gave birth to out of wedlock,” Chukwuenyem said.

“Oluchukwu, an indigene of Ebonyi State, whose family resides in Awka Etiti in Idemili South Local Government Area of Anambra State, was advised to abort the pregnancy because it was out of wedlock, but she refused, insisting on keeping it.

“She was, however, picked up by Safenest after she ran away from home to Awka, Anambra State, where she was later delivered of her baby.

“We contacted her family to break the good news of her delivery to them, but they advised her to sell the baby and to never return to the family with it.

“We were surprised to hear this, and we have therefore taken it upon ourselves to take care of her and the baby.

“We’ve housed her in a safe location, which we do not want to disclose; but I can tell you that she is doing well.

“How much will she sell the baby that will assuage her suffering for nine months?”
