WATCH: Viral video of family alienating maid on Boxing Day raises public concerns on child abuse
A video showing an alleged housemaid looking on while the family she reportedly serves enjoyed a nice day out in celebration of the festivities has gone viral.
In the 1:12 minutes long video, the child could be seen sitting in isolation away from the family – father, mother, and two children – as they happily munched on food and drinks on Boxing Day.
They chatted away without a care in the world at Domino’s Pizza in Abule Egba area of Lagos, while the “maid” wore an expression that spoke volume about her state of unhappiness.
Though little is known about the family’s identities, many have lambasted them for the inhumane treatment of the little girl who is suspected to be between the age range of 10 – 13.
“Terrible people, if you can’t treat your maid as you will your kids what’s the need for having them at all,” one person, Ajibola Tolu, said in the video posted to Neusroom’s Instagram.
There have been incidents of underage housemaids hurting the family they serve in recent times, and another person is of the opinion that such treatment of the maids could be a huge factor in triggering such actions.
“Only God knows what that little [girl] was thinking after they will go work and leave their baby in her hand,” another person, Olade, said in the comments section.
In Nigeria, cases of child abuses and maltreatment are common practice.
There are, sadly, not enough children’s rights organisations providing support to children who are abused and no stringent laws to bring abusers to book. Many cases of child abuse are unreported, while most reported cases are settled at police front desk.
