WATCH: Lagos lawmakers give Governor Ambode lifeline before impeachment

Lagos State lawmakers have given Governor Akinwunmi Ambode an ultimatum to appear before them within a week to defend allegations levelled against him.

The lawmakers who moved a motion of an impeachment process on Monday accuse the governor of not presenting the 2019 budget at the House of Assembly and he had already commenced spending.

Deputy Speaker Wasiu Eshinlokun-Sanni had told the house that a committee set up to examine the issues surrounding the budget “pointed out that the governor ought to lay the budget of the New Year before December 31, but so far it was yet to be laid.

“We asked them (commissioners) to bring out the law that allows them to spend up to 25% of the budget of the preceding year. They could not bring out such a law and we said what they did was wrong.

“We discovered that people had started receiving alerts and this has grave implication for the Executive,” he said.

The lawmakers resolved to give Ambode an option to resign or face impeachment, but Speaker Mudashiru Obasa said it was important to give the governor a fair chance to defend his action.
