The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has reacted to a video of a private citizen found in possession of a card reader.

The video in circulation shows an OAP brandishing a card reader which he didn’t explain how he acquired.

Many citizens had expressed concerns that the availability of the device to a private citizen could give room for massive rigging in the forthcoming elections.

INEC has, however, said in statement Wednesday afternoon that there was no cause for worry.

“We wish to assure the public that mere possession does not in itself give the card reader or its operator access to our systems and processes,” the commission said, while adding that it had launched investigation to ascertain whether the device the OAP displayed was indeed a card reader.

“All card readers to be deployed in elections are to be specifically configured and have certain unique attributes or credentials which must be known and recognised by our systems,” it said further.

“It will not be able to receive or transmit data or communicate with the PVCs or our servers.”

The 2019 general elections kick off in 27 days and there are concerns that there may be loopholes not being effectively checked by the electoral body.
