APC secures majority of seats in By-Elections

The All Progressives Congress (APC) recorded a sweeping victory in Saturday’s by-elections conducted across several states, winning five out of six contested seats announced by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) claimed the only non-APC victory, emerging winner in the Rivers South-East senatorial district.

Enugu North Senatorial District

In Enugu State, APC candidate Asogwa Ikeje Israel won the Enugu North senatorial by-election with a commanding lead.

Results:

  • APC — 162,360 votes
  • NDC — 3,129 votes
  • ADC — 1,676 votes
  • LP — 1,027 votes

Nasarawa North Senatorial District

Danladi Envulu-Anza of the APC emerged victorious in the Nasarawa North senatorial by-election held to replace late senator Godiya Akwashiki.

The result was announced by Professor Aminu Ali, the returning officer, at the College of Education in Akwanga.

Results:

  • APC (Danladi Envulu-Anza) — 45,362 votes
  • LP (Labaran Maku) — 12,931 votes
  • PDP (David Ombugadu) — 11,570 votes
  • ADC (Alaku Ahmed) — 4,244 votes
  • NDC (Duba Dodo) — 1,496 votes
  • NNPP (John Araneshri) — 102 votes

Ondo South Senatorial District

APC candidate Dayo Faduyile won the Ondo South senatorial by-election conducted across six local government areas.

Professor Gbenga Solomon-Ibileye, vice-chancellor of the Federal University Lokoja and returning officer for the election, announced the result in Okitipupa.

Results:

  • APC (Dayo Faduyile) — 68,474 votes
  • APM (Adeolu Akinwunmi) — 1,411 votes
  • APP (Adesanya Olaoluwa) — 213 votes
  • BP (Clement Funso-Nejo) — 70 votes

The by-election was necessitated by the appointment of Jimoh Ibrahim as Nigeria’s permanent representative to the United Nations.

Rivers South-East Senatorial District

The PDP secured victory in Rivers State as its candidate, Olaka Nwogu, won the Rivers South-East senatorial seat.

INEC returning officer Rosemary Ogu announced the result on Sunday.

Results:

  • PDP (Olaka Nwogu) — 47,961 votes
  • APC (Osarosaka Ebenezer) — 1,647 votes
  • AA (Beke Fabeke) — 1,175 votes
  • LP (Sam Bariboa) — 367 votes

The election was conducted following the death of former senator Barinada Mpigi.

Dawakin Kudu/Warawa Federal Constituency, Kano State

Rabiu Shuaibu of the APC won the federal constituency by-election in Kano State.

Professor Umar Sani, the returning officer, declared him winner after the announcement of results.

Results:

  • APC (Rabiu Shuaibu) — 35,356 votes
  • APM (Lawal Haruna) — 268 votes
  • LP (Abubakar Muhammad) — 98 votes

Sani stated that the APC candidate had satisfied all legal requirements and was therefore duly elected.

Zuru State Constituency, Kebbi State

In Kebbi State, APC candidate Rabiu Aiki won the Zuru State Constituency by-election.

Results:

  • APC (Rabiu Aiki) — 4,871 votes
  • LP (Aliyu Muhammad) — 168 votes

INEC disclosed that 109,385 voters were registered for the poll, while 5,156 voters were accredited.

According to the commission, 5,055 votes were valid, 95 votes were rejected, and total votes cast stood at 5,150.

Aiki will now represent the Zuru constituency in the Kebbi State House of Assembly.
