WATCH: Heart-wrenching moment train speeds into revellers in India; 61 dead
Over 60 people have died after a train crushed Dussehra revellers in Amritsar, India, on Friday.
The revellers, Indian Express reports, had gathered to watch the burning of a Ravan and had encroached into the rail track close to venue of the celebrations.
The local train sped by and crushed hundreds of the revellers in the process. 61 persons have been confirmed dead while 72 others were injured.
Authorities say rescue operations were still ongoing, and families of victims have been identifying their loved ones.
“Centre is ready to provide all possible assistance to the State at this hour of grief,” Home Minister Rajnath Singh is quoted as saying.
Punjab Chief Minister, Captain Amarinder Singh has also announced a compensation of Rs 5 lakh (almost N2.5 million) each to the families of those killed in the accident, while those injured will get free medical treatment.
