WATCH: Free Readers Association analyse minimum wage tussle between FG, NLC

The Free Readers Association weighed in on the ongoing back and forth between the Federal Government and the National Labour Congress on the implementation of a new minimum wage.

Both the NLC and FG seemed to have settled for a N30,000 new minimum wage in 2018 – a N12,000 upshoot on the current N18,000 wage. Some state governors had, however, said payment of N30,000 was not favorable as they can only afford N22,500.

Tunji Andrews, an economic expert, faulted both the government and labour union on the disagreement, though he was of the opinion that the proposed N30,000 minimum wage was not enough for workers to adequately sustain a family.

“The NLC themselves don’t seem to be coordinated enough to be able to demand what they should demand and don’t have the right arguments,” he said.

Ireti Bakare-Yusuf, a social commentator and media expert, disagreed with Andrews that the NLC should have probably demanded more.

“Yes of course, N18,000 is a ridiculous amount. But you can’t suddenly go from N18,000 to N30,000, it’s preposterous!” she said. “Everything should be incremental… No government can afford that.”

Both analysts, however, agreed that “the arguments are just wrong on both sides”.
