WATCH: Customs official shoots man dead in Ijebu Ode, authorities claim accidental discharge

A Customs officer allegedly shot and killed a man during a stop and search operation along the Sagamu Interchange, Ijebu Ode, Sunday morning.

The officers were said to be extorting travellers on the road when one of them fired a shot at a man. He died on the spot.

An eyewitness said the incident occurred over the officers’ attempt to extort travellers of N5,000.

Eyewitnesses and sympathisers promptly pounced on the offending officers.

The Nigeria Customs Service has, however, labelled the killing a result of accidental discharge.

The agency said in a statement following public outcry that the passengers attempted to wrestle the rifle away from its official it identified as Destiny Onebamho.

Customs spokesperson Joseph Attah said the bus was stopped for a search on suspicion that it was transporting bales of used clothing.

Attah said the victim, Godwin was not a passenger in the bus “but a good citizen who always come to fetch water for Customs Patrol men anytime they return to the base.”

“Preliminary finding indicate that it was during the skirmishes and struggle to disarm the officer that the riffle discharged and hit the friend of the Customs (Godwin) who lost his life,” Attah said.

The spokesperson said Godwin’s family has been notified of the incident and investigation has commenced.
