WATCH: Buhari coy as Trump refuses to back down on shit-hole comment
President Buhari was diplomatic in his response to a question about Donald Trump’s supposed comment that Africa was filled with “shit-hole” countries during the question and answer segment at the White House on Monday evening.
A reporter asked Buhari to share his take on Trump’s demeaning comments, but the Nigerian president, a guest of the American leader, was coy about his response, choosing to say he would rather not comment on an allegation.
Trump, however, quickly jumped in to say he didn’t have such discussion with Buhari during their meeting inside the Oval office.
“We didn’t discuss it,” he said.
The controversial American president, however, appeared to maintain his stance that some African countries are indeed “shit-holes”, as he added: “And you do have some countries that are in very bad shape and very tough places to live in.”
Trump also said he was very interested in visiting Nigeria, calling it a “beautiful” country.
“I would very much like to visit Nigeria. It is an amazing country and in certain ways, I hear from the standpoint of the beauty of a country, there is no country more beautiful,” he said.
Buhari was the first Sub-Saharan president to visit Trump at the White House.
