Volkswagen to end Beetle production after 7 decades

After an extraordinary 70-year run, Volkswagen has announced that it will stop the production of its iconic Beetle cars by the end of 2019 model-year.

The ‘Bug’, which rocked many Nigerian homes and garages, was birthed by in Germany during the run-up to World War II.

It is the longest-running car in automotive history.

President and Chief Executive Officer of Volkswagen America, Hinrich J. Woebcken, said of the decision on Thursday: “The loss of the Beetle after three generations … will evoke a host of emotions from the Beetle’s many devoted fans.

Woebcken added that “there are no immediate plans to replace it,” but added, “I would also say, ‘Never say never.’”

Volkswagen has already launched special versions of the Beetle coupe and convertible models which it calls the “Final Edition”. It will mark the end of the run sometime next year.
