US Presidential Election 2016: Hillary Clinton’s chances dim as Donald Trump edges closer to victory
The race to determine the next president of the United States is dragging to a close, with Republican candidate, Donald Trump taking a commanding lead over Hillary Clinton.
Trump has now edged his Democrat counterpart in the swing states by winning Florida, Ohio, Iowa and North Carolina, while Hillary took Virginia and Nevada, ABC News projects.
Both presidential candidates are now left to scramble for votes in Michigan, which has not voted for a Republican White House candidate since 1988.
By winning in Ohio, Trump gained a huge boost, as no Republican has ever taken the White House without winning the state. Iowa last voted for a Republican in 2004.
With signs of a Hillary loss in sight, international markets like Mexico, and even the US dollar has already taken a plunge.
Trump has also won the battleground of Georgia, now needing only 26 votes to attain the required 270 total. If elected, he would be the first outsider – a businessman – to make it to the White House as president.
