Uber to end operations in Nigeria after 12 years
Uber, the global ride-hailing company, is set to discontinue its operations in Nigeria after 12 years in the country.
The company disclosed this in a statement issued on Wednesday, announcing that its Nigerian operations would end on September 2, 2026.
“We are writing to share some difficult news. After a thorough review of our business, we have made the tough decision to wind down our operations in Nigeria, effective 2 September 2026,” the company said.
Uber said it has been part of Nigerians’ daily transportation needs since launching its services in Lagos in 2014.
“Since we first launched in Lagos in 2014, it has been an absolute privilege to be a part of your daily life connecting you with independent transportation providers.
“Whether it was a morning commute, a ride to see loved ones, or exploring the city, thank you for trusting the platform to connect you to a driver to get you there safely.
“We know this may cause disruption to your routine, and we sincerely apologize for the inconvenience.”
The company said its help centre would remain available until September 23 for customers who need assistance with outstanding account-related issues.
“Thank you for welcoming us into your city,” the company added.
Uber’s operations in Nigeria have been marked by challenges, including protests by drivers over fares, commission charges and alleged poor treatment in 2017, 2023 and 2025.
Since its establishment in 2009, Uber has withdrawn its services from 14 countries across Asia and Africa.
