Troops Seize Cache of Firearms in Zamfara Raid
Nigeria’s ongoing fight against insurgency, troops of Operation Fansan Yamma have seized a significant cache of firearms and ammunition in Kaura Namoda Local Government Area (LGA) of Zamfara State. The operation, conducted between January 26 and 27, was a collaborative effort between military operatives and personnel from the Department of State Services (DSS), according to a report by Zagazola Makama, a leading counter-insurgency publication focused on the Lake Chad region.
The raid was reportedly prompted by actionable intelligence pointing to the activities of suspected arms dealers from the Niger Republic. A military source, quoted by Makama, revealed that the troops launched a covert operation to track the suspects, culminating in a high-speed pursuit along the Kaura Namoda-Zurmi road.
“The suspects attempted to evade capture by diverting their vehicle into the bush,” the source stated. “However, they were forced to abandon it after being engaged by the troops.”
A thorough search of the abandoned vehicle yielded a staggering haul of weapons, including:
Two PKT machine guns, Nine AK-47 rifles, Thirteen magazines, 171 rounds of 7.62mm special ammunition, Nine rounds of PKT ammunition
Despite the successful recovery of the arms, the suspects managed to escape into the surrounding area. Security forces have intensified efforts to track and apprehend the individuals, who are believed to be part of a larger network fueling regional instability.
This operation underscores the ongoing challenges faced by Nigerian security forces in curbing the flow of illegal arms across the country’s borders. The recovery of such a substantial arsenal is a significant blow to criminal elements operating in Zamfara State, a region long plagued by banditry and insurgency.
Authorities have called for increased vigilance and cooperation from local communities to help dismantle these networks and restore peace to the area. As the manhunt for the suspects continues, the successful operation serves as a reminder of the critical role intelligence and inter-agency collaboration play in combating insecurity.
