Three drown, five missing as boat capsizes in Lagos
A boat mishap late Wednesday evening has led to the death of at least three people between Liverpool and Coconut under-bridge, Lagos.
The 20-seater boat with two operators was enroute Ojo from Liverpool when it capsized following a collision with a water supply service boat.
LASEMA said in a statement made available to Neusroom on Thursday that the emergency management team of Lagos State Waterways Authority, LASWA, in collaboration with local divers, was able to rescue twelve passengers.
Two of the victims (a male and a female) were taken to the morgue, while a third victim identified as Alhaja was handed to her family for burial after proper documentation.
Five other persons were still missing as at Thursday noon.
LASWA General Manager, Damilola Emmanuel said the accident could have been averted if boat operators adhered to the agency’s ban on trips at night.
Emmanuel implored passengers to insist on wearing life jackets while embarking on ferry rides to avert being victims of any accidents.
