Thomas Partey v Samuel Chukwueze: African Football Stars To Watch

This weekend promises to be intriguing for football lovers on DStv as two of the best African players in La Liga, Thomas Partey and Samuel Chukwueze go on a head-to-head clash in the match between Atletico Madrid and Villarreal.

SuperSport remains your best bet to get the full action as the #HomeOfFootball and the ultimate destination for lovers of ‘The Beautiful Game’, as well as the only place to get English commentary from the legendary La Liga.

Atletico Madrid midfielder Partey has been the subject of major transfer speculation throughout 2020, with the 27-year-old Ghanaian strongly linked with a move to the Premier League – in particular a resurgent Arsenal.

However, he has thus far remained with Atleti and looks set to be a key man for Diego Simeone’s side, as they look to challenge the likes of Real Madrid and Barcelona for ascendancy in Spain’s topflight.

“A player like Thomas Partey stops things getting to the back four – he is that screen that sits there, like [Patrick] Vieira and Gilberto were – someone who protects the back four so they don’t even need to break a sweat,” said former Arsenal forward Kevin Campbell, who would love to see the Black Stars’ new vice-captain head to the red side of North London.

Yet Partey will have to put in a huge performance to take the spotlight off of Villarreal’s Nigerian winger Samuel Chukwueze, who has started the 2020-21 season in strong form for the ‘Yellow Submarine’ and looks set to continue his rise to superstardom.

The Super Eagles winger has pace and invention, making him one of Villarreal’s most important players when it comes to breaking down defences – and a resilient Atletico backline will offer him a worthy challenge in this clash.

“He [Chukwueze] has great attacking qualities and adds an important element to our team,” said Villarreal manager Unai Emery. “He and all of the attacking players must continue to improve as we go further into the season, but I have faith that this team can achieve great things.”

Partey’s Atletico got the better of Chukwueze’s Villarreal in the teams’ La Liga meetings last season, with the club from the capital city claiming four points thanks to a 0-0 draw at Estadio de la Ceramica in December 2019 and a 3-1 home win at Estadio Wanda Metropolitano in February of this year.
