“There will be riot if Lagos government carries on with the Keke ban” — aggrieved driver threatens

A riot is brewing in Lagos after an aggrieved Keke driver in Lekki threatened earlier that a riot will soon break out in the city if the government does not reverse the Okada and Keke ban in some areas of the state.

He said that a lot of impoverished people who have been struggling to make ends meet with Keke are not going to fold their hands and watch their means of livelihood taken away from them. He also said that the way the leaders treat poor people in the country is very wicked.

“There will be a riot, I swear to Almighty God! The government has done their own. We too will do our own. It’s not only me oo,” he said.

The visibly angry man told Neusroom that his grouse with the Keke ban is that the government never engaged them and try to figure out a way to make things easy for all the parties involved.

“You cannot just come out and say Keke should go. We are transporters too. If you want to bring something else then, bring it first so that we will have another thing to do,” he said.

The Lagos state government had on Saturday, February 1, banned Okada and Keke Napep from plying major roads in the metropolis. The action was not well-received by both riders and some members of the public who patronize them.

Neusroom can confirm that a riot is already building up in some parts of Lagos on mid-Monday morning. According to eyewitnesses, some protesters who are believed to be Okada and Keke Riders are currently having a standoff with the police at Ijora, Lagos. The angry mob is reportedly stoning buses and burning tyres in the area.

There are indications that more areas will soon join in the protest as the ban continues.
