The U.S imposes partial visa ban on Ghana for being uncooperative

The United States has imposed a partial visa ban on certain categories of individuals seeking entry visa from Ghana to the U.S on grounds that the West African country has being uncooperative in accepting Ghanaian citizens to be deported from the US.

The U.S Department of Homeland Security said in a statement released on Thursday that it cooperates with other countries in accepting back U.S citizens when asked to do so. They also revealed that this is a common practice around the world, and they see no reasons why Ghana has been refusing to accept their own citizens when they are deported.

“As a result, Secretary of State Pompeo has ordered consular officers in Ghana to implement visa restrictions on certain categories of visa applicants. Without an appropriate response from Ghana, the scope of these sanctions may be expanded to a wider population,” the statement read.

It is not clear whether this issues of nonacceptance of deport notification from Ghanaian government has been on a general case or an incident of a particular set of immigrants from Ghana who are living in the U.S.

But the U.S has insisted that “the sanctions will remain in place until the Secretary of Homeland Security notifies Secretary Pompeo that cooperation on removals has improved to an acceptable level.”
