The Complete version of the Nigerian National Anthem and Pledge

The melodious sound of the Nigerian national anthem is recognizable by all Nigerians. It is the highlight of every Super Eagles game and serves as the opening formalities of all official gatherings in the country.

The present national anthem, ‘Arise O Compatriots’ was adopted in 1978 to replace the previous anthem, ‘Nigeria We Hail Thee’. The lyrics to the anthem were a combination of words taken from the best entries across the country.

The authors included John A. Ilechukwu, Eme Etim Akpan, B. A. Ogunnaike, Sota Omoigui and P. O. Aderibigbe. The words were put to music by the Nigerian Police Band under the leadership of Benedict E. Odiase.

Although Arise O Compatriots comprises two verses, only the first verse is sung. The second verse is mostly recited as a national prayer on special occasions or in religious institutions.

Nigerian National Anthem

1.
Arise, O compatriots, Nigeria’s call obey
To serve our fatherland
With love and strength and faith
The labour of our heroes past
Shall never be in vain
To serve with heart and might
One nation bound in freedom, peace and unity.

2.
Oh God of creation, direct our noble cause
Guide our leader’s right
Help our youth the truth to know
In love and honesty to grow
And living just and true
Great lofty heights attain
To build a nation where peace and justice shall reign.

National Pledge

The Nigerian pledge was written by Prof (Mrs.) Felicia Adebola Adedoyin in 1976. Two years before the current National Anthem. The pledge is recited immediately after the Nigerian national anthem

I pledge to Nigeria my Country
To be faithful, loyal and honest
To serve Nigeria with all my strength
To defend her unity
And uphold her honour and glory
So help me God.
