“That serves you right” – Nigerian mother tells daughter after a cousin raped her

A Nigerian lady has described how shocked she was to hear a friend recount her mother’s reaction to a shocking incident.

Faith Ezenwere share the following on Facebook…

She met me after a pep talk on cultivating wholesome relationships in her school. She was struggling to ask a question. Her friends finally sold her out and she spoke up eventually.

“Aunty what if the person forced himself on you” (rape she meant). I told her if that be the case, she would have to report to the appropriate authorities and not keep mute about.

She shouldn’t feel guilty about it nor be afraid to speak up so the perpetrator of the evil act won’t go about dishing it out to others.

I paused, looked at her and asked ‘has someone taken carnal knowledge of you forcefully before? She answered in the affirmative. A cousin of hers she said did it. The chills that came over me were visible.

I gave her an appointment in my house later in the day. She came. We got talking. She explained how it all happened. He sent her on an errand, she returned to deliver the message. He asked her to join him in watching a pornographic movie. She declined; he pushed her unto the bed. She shouted; no help came. They have all gone to farm. He had his way and left her on the bed possibly to her fate

Now, the part that got to me was when she said she told her parents and a mother’s reply was “that serves you right; I thought I warned you to stop visiting him”

“And after that what happened next” I enquired. Nothing she responded.

“Did you say nothing? You mean it was swept under the carpet? He got away with it, just like that.

Faith didn’t state when the incident occurred.
