Survivors: The Coronavirus statistics that nobody talks about

While the whole world is now united in a single effort to see an end to the COVID-19 pandemic, there have been fears and uncertainty over the severity of the disease. The stories in every country have been gloomy as people only talk about the infected cases and the number of deaths recorded. No one talks about the survivors. In fact, the World Health Organization (WHO) does not include the number of recovered cases in its daily COVID-19 Situation Report.

The bad news is that as of April 20, COVID-19 has killed over 166,000 persons from a total of more than 2.4 million confirmed cases globally. But there is more to the story that might ease everyone up a little – there have been a lot of survivors too.

According to a report by the Coronavirus Resource Centre at Johns Hopkins University, over 635,000 people have recovered from COVID-19 out of the 2.420 million confirmed cases. While COVID-19 is still a threat to the world, knowing that the disease is not an outright death sentence could reduce the panic that many people are undergoing.

In China where the pandemic broke out, official reports released by the World Health Organization (WHO) show that out of over 84,201 COVID-19 cases in the country, only 4,642 deaths have been recorded. Almost 95% (77,745) of COVID-19 cases in the country have recovered or are in remission, according to Johns Hopkins University.

Although the death rate in Italy, one of the most affected countries was way higher than in any other place before it was overtaken by the US, the rate of survival is equally higher than the fatalities. Among the 23,660 people who have died out of the 178,972 confirmed cases of COVID-19, about 47,000 have recovered, according to Johns Hopkins University.

The reality in the US where the number of confirmed cases is now the highest around the world after surpassing 750,000, appears somewhat sad. Having recorded more than 40,000 deaths, only about 70,980 people have recovered so far. The US President, Donald Trump sent out an invitation asking medical professionals across the world for help in fighting the COVID-19 earlier in March.

With scientists from all around the world working hard to find a permanent cure to the disease, there is bound to be some good news soon.
