SIM Card Activation Services Disrupted as Telcos Migrate to New Verification Platform

SIM card-related services across all mobile networks in Nigeria have been temporarily disrupted as telecommunications operators transition to a new identity verification platform mandated by the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC).

The Association of Licensed Telecommunications Operators of Nigeria (ALTON) disclosed the development in a joint statement issued Tuesday by its chairman, Gbenga Adebayo, and publicity secretary, Damian Udeh.

Adebayo said the platform migration has caused technical issues affecting services such as SIM registration, SIM swap, SIM replacement, and mobile number portability.

“While the new platform is intended to enhance the integrity and efficiency of identity management in Nigeria, unfortunately, the transition has temporarily impacted the ability of MNOs to deliver seamless SIM-related services,” the statement reads.

“During this period, MNOs will not be able to support SIM Swap, SIM replacement, activation of new subscribers and other SIM-related services.”

The disruption stems from a directive by NIMC requiring all Mobile Network Operators (MNOs) to shift to a new digital identity authentication system. However, ALTON noted that the migration process has led to “unforeseen technical challenges affecting service availability nationwide.”

Adebayo said operators are working closely with NIMC, the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), and other stakeholders to restore service quickly.

“We understand the inconvenience this may cause to millions of subscribers who depend on these services for communication, business, and daily activities,” he added.

“We sincerely apologise for the disruption and kindly advise subscribers to postpone visits to service centres for SIM-related transactions until further notice.”

He assured that ALTON remains committed to delivering secure, high-quality telecom services and will provide timely updates as the situation progresses.
