Senator Dino Melaye under house arrest as police vow not to vacate premises

Senator Dino Melaye will celebrate his crossover into 2019 behind the gates of his Abuja residence… unless he surrenders to the police.

The police, who have laid siege at the lawmaker’s residence in Maitama since Friday, have said they won’t vacate the premises until he surrenders.

The authorities say Melaye was wanted for his connection with the attempted murder of a police officer named Danjuma Saliu.

Melaye was alleged to have ordered thugs to attack Danjuma during a stop and search operation along Ayetoro, Gbede road in Kogi, back in July.

Danjuma was said to have been shot and wounded by the Senator’s thugs.

Police claim that he refused to honour a letter of invitation sent to the National Assembly on July 23 in relation to the incident.

Melaye, police have said, faces charges of criminal conspiracy and attempted culpable homicide.

The authorities also attached photos of a recovering Danjuma and his medical records from the Federal Medical Center, Lokoja, to the statement released early Monday.

“The police officer, Sgt. Danjuma Saliu, is yet to recover from the gunshot injury he sustained during the attack and still under intensive medical care in the hospital,” the statement read.

Melaye has claimed that the police have cut off his water and electricity supply for three days since arriving his residence.
