Senate orders committee to pay condolence visits to slain soldiers’ families

The Senate has directed its Committee on Army to pay condolence visits to the families of 44 soldiers and 9 farmers who were killed by Boko Haram over the weekend.

The insurgents had launched attacks on three military bases in villages in Borno on Sunday.

Residents told AFP on Tuesday that the armed terrorists killed nine farmers and abducted 12 others in the Mammanti village.

“We are all aware that a few days ago we lost about 44 brave soldiers of the Nigerian Army in Northern Borno,” Senate President Bukola Saraki said on Thursday.

“We must pay our respects to these brave men that have sacrificed and paid the ultimate sacrifice for our own safety and peace in our country.”

The Nigerian Army earlier claimed it had “technically defeated” Boko Haram terrorists in the north.
