Senate issues 6-day ultimatum to IGP Idris to explain Benue killings

Nigerian lawmakers have given police Inspector General Ibrahim Idris until next Wednesday to appear at the chamber.

The Senate had summoned Idris on Wednesday to appear at the chamber on Thursday, but Idris instead embarked on a “courtesy visit” to Bauchi.

“The Senate resolved to give the Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, until 11am on Wednesday, 2nd May 2018 to appear before it,” the upper chamber stated on Thursday after Idris failed to honour its previous invitation.

“This resolution followed the debate on the security situation in the nation, with an emphasis on the killings in Benue State.”

The spate of killings by suspected herdsmen in Benue has increased in the past days, with attacks on church buildings being the latest.

No fewer than twenty-four persons, including priests, have been killed in two separate church attacks by the rampaging herdsmen in the space of three days.
